CONTEMPLATING RETIREMENT
He considered retiring in 2018 in order to spend more time with his family. He also took up the position of associate professor at Jinan University in Guangzhou, People's Republic of China, before deciding to continue in the sport with a view to competing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "After the [2018] Asian Games, I decided to take a break and spend more time with my family. Because of training and travelling, I had spent less than a week with my wife and son since he was born. I had planned to retire this season [2018], but there are still some dreams to be fulfilled, so I persevered." (usa.chinadaily.com.cn, 11 Sep 2018; sohu.com, 29 Jul 2018; sangbe.com, 07 Feb 2018)

OCCUPATION
He works as an associate professor at Jinan University in Guangzhou, People's Republic of China. (live.qq.com, 25 Jun 2019; usa.chinadaily.com.cn, 11 Sep 2018)

TURNING POINT
Following the 2014 season he and his coach at the time, Yuan Guoqiang, decided he should change to start with his left foot going forward first instead of his right foot, as he found his rhythm in a race was affected by a weak and unsteady third step. "It was like a desperate gamble, a brand new start for me. I knew if it worked I would find some room to improve, otherwise it could have led to the end of my career." (IAAF, 16 Mar 2016)
