The People's Republic of China achieved their best Olympic result in the men's 4x100m relay at the 2016 Games, where the disqualification of the US team elevated them from fifth place to fourth on the night. The Chinese team made their Olympic debut in the event at the 1988 Games, but would have to wait another 20 years until they competed for a second time, on home soil at the 2008 Games, where they were disqualified in the final. The Chinese team failed to progress from their heat at the 2012 Games in London.

At the world championships, the People's Republic of China were surprise medallists in front of a home crowd at the 2015 edition in Beijing, where they crossed the line in third position before being upgraded to silver following the disqualification of the US team. Prior to this, they had only qualified for one final in six attempts between 1983 and 2013. At the most recent edition of the tournament in 2019, they finished ranked last out of the six teams that posted an official result in the final.
