Laura Strugnell and Clarissa Johnston qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games as a result of Strugnell and Emma Manners-Wood's performance at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju. Strugnell and Manners-Wood were the top-ranked African nation at the world championships that had not already qualified for the 2020 Games.

Strugnell and Johnston are the first duet to represent South Africa at the Olympic Games since Loren Wulfsohn and Amanda Taylor contested the event at the 1992 Games in Barcelona.
