Nuria Diosdado and Joana Jimenez secured their place at the 2020 Games through their performance at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. They finished second behind Canada in Peru, but as Canada had already qualified for Tokyo, Diosdado and Jimenez clinched the one Olympic berth available at the tournament.

The pair's runners-up spot at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima was a repeat of the silver medal Diosdado won four years earlier alongside Karem Achach. At the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, Republic of Korea, Diosdado and Jimenez qualified for the final in both the free and technical routines, and finished in 11th place in both events.
