General Interest

General
Ukraine won bronze on their first appearance at the Olympic Games at Atlanta 1996 and followed that medal with silver in Sydney four years later. Since then, they have not reached an Olympic podium and at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro they placed eighth in the final. At London 2012, it appeared they had claimed bronze until a successful appeal by Japan over a scoring technicality saw the Japanese team lifted into the silver medal position with Ukraine dropping to fourth.

At the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, the Ukrainian team ranked eighth, which secured their qualification for Tokyo. They won bronze on their world championship debut in 1994 and again in 2001, with their best result since then a fifth-place finish at the 2011 edition in Tokyo.

Ukraine are the reigning European champions, having claimed the title in Bern, Switzerland, in December 2020. At the previous edition in 2018 they had ranked 13th.
