General Interest

General
The United States of America secured their spot at the 2020 Games in Tokyo by winning the final Olympic qualification tournament held in Paris in June 2021. They topped the qualification round in France before victories over Slovenia, Spain, France and Indonesia saw them claim the title and their Olympic berth.

Tokyo will be the US team's ninth consecutive appearance at the Olympic Games since 1988. During that time, they have finished on the podium on five occasions, including their sole Olympic title they claimed on home soil in 1996. At the 2016 Games in Rio, they overcame Indonesia and the People's Republic of China to set up the gold medal match against the Republic of Korea. In the final, their Korea opponents proved too strong and the US team had to settle for the runners-up spot for the second consecutive Games.

The United States of America have won more gold medals [15] and total medals [21] than any other nation at the world championships. They ended a 30-year wait for a world title in 2013, but they have been unable to step back on the podium at the three editions since. In a disappointing performance at the most recent edition of the tournament in 2019, the US team lost to Kazakhstan to finish ranked joint ninth.

At continental level, the US team won gold on their last appearance at the Pan American championships in 2018, but did not enter the team event in 2021. They also won nine consecutive gold medals at the Pan American Games between 1979 and 2011, but dropped to second in 2015 and third in 2019.
