General Interest

In Rio de Janeiro in 2016, Uzbekistan had by far its best Olympic Games when it claimed four gold, two silver and seven bronze medals. The gold tally was one more than the NOC had won at all its other Games combined, and the 13 medals in total was eight better than its previous highest total from 2004.

Three of the four gold medals in Brazil came in the boxing ring, won by Hasanboy Dusmatov in the men's light flyweight division, Fazliddin Gaibnazarov in the men's light welterweight division and Shakhobidin Zoirov in the men's flyweight category. Uzbekistan fared so well in boxing in Rio that it topped the sport's medal table. With a further two silver and two bronze medals, the NOC finished above Cuba and France with an overall total of seven medals.

Uzbekistan competed as an independent nation at the Olympic Games for the first time in 1996 and since then has won a medal at every Games. The central Asian nation has won seven gold medals since 1996 with two coming in wrestling. In fact, all but three of the 30 medals the NOC has won have come in combat sports. Boxers have won 14 medals, wrestlers have won seven medals and judokas six.

Artur Taimazov is Uzbekistan's most successful Olympian with one gold [2004] and one silver medal [2000]. However, his legacy was tarnished when his gold medals from the 2008 and 2012 Games were stripped for doping offences.

The only other athletes to win gold for Uzbekistan before its standout Rio 2016 Games were Greco-Roman wrestler Alexander Dokturishvili, who was victorious in the men's 74kg class in 2004, and boxer Mahamadkadyz Abdullaev, who topped the podium in the men's light welterweight division in Sydney in 2000.
