Syrian Arab Republic - Profile
General Interest
At the Rio 2016 Games, a four-man, three-woman team represented the Syrian Arab Republic, with Majd Eddin Ghazal's seventh-place finish in the men's high jump the most notable result.
The Syrian Arab Republic has won three medals, one of each type, at the Olympic Games. The 1948 Games were the first in which the NOC sent an athlete to compete and it was almost 40 years later, in 1984, that a Syrian athlete won the NOC's first medal.
That first medallist was freestyle wrestler Joseph Atiyeh. He took silver in the men's 96kg event in Los Angeles. Wrestling is the sport in which Syrian athletes have had the most consistently significant results. Khaled Al-Faraj finished fifth in the Greco-Roman 50kg division at the 1988 Games and a number of other Syrian wrestlers have had top-10 finishes.
The next real highlight for a Syrian athlete came at Atlanta 1996 when Ghada Shouaa stepped to the top of the women's heptathlon podium after winning her NOC's first gold medal.
The Athens 2004 Games were the site of the Syrian Arab Republic's most recent Olympic medal. Heavyweight boxer Naser Al Shami advanced past two opponents to reach the semifinals where he was beaten by the eventual gold medallist from Cuba and forced to settle for a bronze medal.
