General Interest

Judoka Tina Trstenjak defeated France's Clarisse Agbegnenou in the final of the women's 63kg category to claim Slovenia's sole gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The NOC also won two silver medals and one bronze at the Games in Brazil. One of the silver medals went to sailor Vasilij Zbogar in the men's Finn event and was his third total Olympic medal, adding to the silver he won in 2008 and bronze from 2004, both in the Laser event.

Slovenia competed at the Olympic Games as an independent nation for the first time in 1992, having previously competed as part of Yugoslavia.

Slovenia's first gold medals were both won in Sydney in 2000. Iztok Cop and Luka Spik teamed up to win men's double sculls rowing gold and Rajmond Debevec won the men's shooting 50m rifle 3 positions title. Cop would win his fourth Olympic medal [one gold, one silver, two bronze total] at the London 2012 Games, making him Slovenia's most successful Olympic athlete. Debevec added two further rifle bronze medals in 2008 and 2012.

Both Cop and Debevec appeared in six consecutive Games for Slovenia, starting in Barcelona in 1992 and ending in London in 2012, but the latter also competed at two Games [1984, 1988] for Yugoslavia.

Urska Zolnir became the NOC's first female gold medallist when she won the 63kg judo event at the London 2012 Games, adding to the bronze she won in the same event at Athens 2004.

Primoz Kozmus won gold in the men's hammer throw in athletics at the 2008 Games in China. Kozmuz added silver to his collection four years later at the London 2012 Games.
