Saudi Arabia - Profile
General Interest
Saudi athletes made their first appearance at an Olympic Games in 1972 in Munich where an all-male team competed in athletics events.
The NOC had to wait until Sydney 2000 for its first Olympic medal, and it came on the athletics track when Hadi Soua'an Al-Somaily took silver in the men's 400m hurdles in which he finished three-hundredths behind Angelo Taylor from the United States of America. A few days later, Saudi Arabia had its second medal when Khaled Al Eid finished third in the equestrian jumping event.
At the London 2012 Games, Saudi Arabia claimed a third Olympic medal, and it again came in equestrian. Abdullah Al Sharbatly, Abdullah Bin Moteb Al Saud, Kamal Bahamdan and Ramzy Hamad Al Duhami teamed up to take bronze in the team jumping event.
Saudi Arabia sent it's first two female competitors to an Olympic Games at London 2012. Sarah Attar competed in the 800m athletics event and 16-year-old Wodjan Shaherkani contested the judo +78kg event.
At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Saudi Arabia sent 11 athletes to compete across five sports.
