RAPID RISE
Having only begun rowing in late 2016, he soon set himself the goal of competing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "I adapted to the sport quite quickly and was encouraged by my coach at the time to look into international representation. Just before graduating I sent an email to the top rowing clubs in London [England] describing my height, my weight and my current scores which were awful at the time and asked the simple question, 'Do you think it is possible to go from where I am here, today to qualify for the Olympics in four years?'." He contacted the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee in August 2017 and went on to compete at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia. "They too were supportive and loved the fact that I was introducing new sports to the region. I was entered [for the 2018 Asian Games] and when I got there the magnitude hit me. My competitors were Olympians. Seeing the Saudi flag flying for the first time in a rowing event I just thought, 'What are you doing here?'"
