General Interest
Athletes from the Russian Federation will compete for ROC at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo after the decision taken by the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS] in December 2020 regarding the case of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency [RUSADA].
The Russian Federation made its debut at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996. Russian athletes previously represented the Russian Empire [1900-12], the Soviet Union [1952-88], and the Unified Team [1992] at the Olympic Games.
The best-performing athletes for the Russian Federation in terms of gold medals are artistic swimmers Anastasia Davydova, Natalia Ishchenko, and Svetlana Romashina, who have each won five gold medals.
Top performances have come across a range of sports since 1996. Greco-Roman wrestler Alexandr Karelin won his third consecutive gold medal in the 120kg division in Atlanta, having previously won gold for the Soviet Union [1988] and the Unified Team [1992]. He went on to claim his fourth medal, a silver, in 2000.
Artistic gymnast Alexei Nemov won a total of 12 Olympic medals [four gold, two silver, six bronze], claiming six medals at both the 1996 and 2000 Games. In Atlanta he secured gold in the team event and the vault, and four years later in Sydney he claimed victory in the individual all-around and the horizontal bar.
Aleksandr Popov is regarded as one of the greatest sprint freestyle swimmers of all time. Representing the Unified Team in 1992, he won the 50m-100m freestyle double, and added silver medals in the 4x100m freestyle relay and 4x100m medley relay. Four years later in Atlanta, this time representing the Russian Federation, he repeated his Barcelona exploits to win another four medals. In doing so he became the first swimmer to win back-to-back men's 100m freestyle titles since US swimmer Johnny Weissmuller in 1928. Popov would add a ninth overall medal when he claimed silver in the 100m freestyle in Sydney in 2000.
