Puerto Rico - Profile
General Interest
Puerto Rico made its Olympic debut at the London 1948 Games where an all-male team competed in three sports. Juan Venegas won the NOC's first Olympic medal at those Games, a bronze in the men's bantamweight boxing.
Puerto Rico has won nine total medals in the 18 Olympic Games to which it has sent a team before Tokyo 2020. Until London in 2012, all medals won by the NOC came in the boxing ring. The best performance in boxing came from Luis Ortiz who won lightweight silver at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. All the other medals won in the sport have been bronze.
At the London 2012 Games, Jamie Yusept Espinal won Puerto Rico's second silver medal, claiming second place in the men's 84kg freestyle wrestling event. A first for Puerto Rico in London was Javier Culson's bronze medal in the men's 400m hurdles, as a Puerto Rican athlete had never won an athletics medal before.
The NOC had to wait until the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro for its first gold medal when tennis player Monica Puig triumphed in the women's singles tournament. She beat Angelique Kerber 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the final, and also became the first Puerto Rican woman to win an Olympic medal of any kind. Unseeded at the Games, her feat led to her being named the Best Female Athlete of Rio 2016 by the Association of National Olympic Committees. Puig was the only Puerto Rican athlete to win a medal at the Games in Brazil.
