General Interest

Nicaragua was first represented at the Mexico City 1968 Games where an all-male team competed in three sports. Donald Velez, who competed in javelin, long jump and the decathlon in 1968, carried the country's flag into the opening ceremony at those first Games, and did so again at the next Games in 1972.

Nicaragua's best Olympic result was achieved by its men's baseball team at the 1996 Games. The team advanced from the preliminary round with a four-win and three-loss record in Atlanta, booking a semifinal with the unbeaten Cuban team. In the semifinal, Nicaragua was beaten 8-1 by the eventual gold medallists, and then went down to the United States of America 10-3 in the bronze medal play-off. The team's fourth-place finish is the closest a Nicaraguan athlete or team has come to an Olympic medal.

At the Rio 2016 Games, Nicaragua sent a five-person team to compete in four sports.
