She played football before a coach encouraged her to try weightlifting because of her physique. Her father did not want her to pursue the sport and she had to keep her training a secret from him. She took time off from the sport in 2015 to give birth to her first child. She thought her career was over and considered quitting as she and her husband Orlando Vasquez, who is also a weightlifter, left the Nicaraguan training centre in Managua and returned to her hometown, Puerto Cabezas. "People told me I couldn't continue in the sport. I was feeling sad because I had lost everything. I was not studying and already did not have my sporting career. We did not train for all of 2016. In January 2017 the weightlifting [federation] president [Miguel Nino] called us and told me that I still had strength and that they all trusted me."
