General Interest

Nauru has not won a medal in its six Games appearances since its Olympic debut in 1996. The small island nation's best result at the Games is an eighth place, secured by Yukio Peter in the men's 69kg weightlifting event at the 2004 Games, his only Olympic participation.

Weightlifter Itte Detenamo competed at three Games between 2004 and 2012, with his best result being 10th in the +105kg division in 2008.

Possibly the most memorable story of a Nauruan athlete was that of Marcus Stephen. After initially competing for Samoa at the 1992 Games because Nauru was not yet recognised by the IOC, Stephen returned to represent his birth nation at the 1996 and 2000 Games. While never having great success at the Olympic Games, he did win seven gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and later went on to become a member of parliament in Nauru then president of the country in 2007.

Two male athletes represented Nauru in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Ovini Uera competed in judo and Elson Brechtefeld in weightlifting. Both athletes made their Olympic debut at the Games.
