General Interest

Mali first competed at the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo and has missed just one edition of the Games since. At the 1964 Games, the country's first two Olympians, Sara Camara and Dramane Sereme, competed in athletics events.

Mali's first female Olympian was Fatalmoudou Toure, she ran the athletics 800m event in Moscow in 1980. At those 1980 Games, Namakoro Niare became the first Malian athlete to compete at three Olympic Games. He did not progress from the qualifying round of the discus event at the 1968 and 1980 Games, but his best performance was in 1972 where he reached the final and finished 13th. Niare's son, Yves, represented France in shot put at the 2008 Games in Beijing.

One of Mali's biggest moments at the Olympic Games came in 2004 when the men's football team reached the quarterfinals after topping its group with a one-win, two-draw preliminary round record. In the quarterfinal, Mali lost 1-0 to eventual bronze medallist Italy.

Taekwondoka Daba Keita finished equal-fifth in the men's +80kg category at London 2012. He was beaten in the semifinal 6-4 by Italian Carlo Molfetta after winning his two previous bouts to reach that stage.

At the Rio Games in 2016, Mali sent a team of six athletes to compete in four sports.
