General Interest
The 2020 Games in Tokyo will mark Kazakhstan's seventh Olympic appearance as an independent nation. Athletes from the NOC won three gold medals across three different sports at its first Games in 1996 in Atlanta. Greco-Roman wrestler Youri Melnichenko won the first, claiming victory in the 60kg division, and was then followed by Alex Parygin who secured modern pentathlon gold and Vasily Zhirov who won the light-heavyweight division boxing title.
Zhirov's achievement at Atlanta 1996 started a culture of success for Kazakh boxers at the Olympic Games, as the NOC has won at least one title in the sport at each edition of the Games since. Possibly the most famous boxer to represent Kazakhstan at the Olympic Games is Gennady Golovkin. Despite losing to Russian Gaydarbek Gaydarbekov in the gold medal bout at the 2004 Games in Athens, Golovkin went on to be rated one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
Olga Shishigina became the first female athlete from Kazakhstan to win gold at the Olympic Games when she triumphed in the women's 100m hurdles at Sydney 2000. Olga Rypakova is the only other competitor from the NOC to win a medal in athletics, claiming victory in the women's triple jump at the 2012 Games in London.
Kazakh weightlifters have also claimed two Olympic gold medals. Alla Vazhenina won the women's 75kg category at Beijing 2008, while Nijat Rahimov secured the men's 77kg title at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro were Kazakhstan's most successful by total number of medals with the NOC claiming three gold, five silver and 10 bronze medals. Perhaps the most notable result was Dmitriy Balandin's victory in the men's 200m breaststroke, which was Kazakhstan's first Olympic gold medal in swimming.
