General Interest

Israel sent a team to contest an Olympic Games for the first time in 1952 in Helsinki. Since then, the NOC has missed just one edition of the Games, when it took part in the boycott of the Moscow 1980 Games. Diver Yoav Ra'anan secured Israel's most notable result at the 1952 Games, just missing out on reaching the men's 3m springboard final by one place. He went on to compete at the 1956 Games in Melbourne where he carried the Israeli flag into the opening ceremony.

Israel won its first medals at the 1992 Games in Barcelona where judoka Yael Arad and Shay-Oren Smadja claimed silver [women's 63kg] and bronze [men's 73kg], respectively. Since those first medals, Israeli athletes have won seven more, securing three podium finishes in sailing, one in canoe sprint, and a further three in judo.

The NOC's only Olympic gold medal was won by sailor Gal Fridman in the Mistral class at the 2004 Games in Athens. Fridman is also the sole Israeli athlete to have won more than one Olympic medal, as he had claimed a bronze medal in the Mistral class at Atlanta 1996.
