Hungary - Profile
General Interest
Hungary made its Olympic debut at the 1896 Games in Athens, where athletes from the NOC won a total of six medals - two gold, one silver and three bronze. Both gold medals were won by Alfred Hajos, in the 100m and 1200m freestyle swimming events. Hajos, an architect by trade, went on to compete in the non-IOC recognised architectural events at the Olympic Games, winning a silver medal in 1924.
Fencer Aladar Gerevich, who competed between 1932 and 1960, stands out as one of Hungary's most notable Olympic athletes. His seven gold medals in sabre [one individual and six team] mean he has more Olympic titles than any other competitor from Hungary, while his overall total of 10 is a joint-record for the NOC. Gerevich also shares the Olympic appearance record for Hungary [six] with windsurfer Aron Gadorfalvi [1996-2016] and fellow fencer Aida Mohamed [1996-2016]. Other prominent Hungarian fencers through the years include Pal Kovacs [six gold, one bronze] between 1936 and 1960, Rudolf Karpati [six gold] from 1948 to 1960, and Ildiko Sagi-Rejto [two gold, three silver and two bronze] in women's foil between 1960 and 1976.
Gymnast Agnes Keleti is the only other athlete from Hungary to have won 10 Olympic medals, claiming five gold, three silver and two bronze across the 1952 and 1956 Games. She dominated the women's gymnastics competition at Melbourne 1956, winning four gold medals and two silver medals in the seven events on the programme.
Hungary has also had Olympic success in the pool, both in swimming and water polo. Krisztina Egerszegi is the NOC's most outstanding swimmer, winning four gold medals in women's backstroke events and one gold in the 400m individual medley between 1988 and 1996. Tamas Darnyi did the double-double in the men's 200m and 400m individual medley events in 1988 and 1992, while Katinka Hosszu was the stand-out Hungarian performer in swimming at Rio 2016 with three gold medals and one silver medal.
Hungary has won more medals in water polo than any other NOC at the Olympic Games, with the men's team standing on the podium 15 times out of the 22 occasions it has competed in the Olympic tournament. Nine of the men's team's medals are gold, which includes a run of three consecutive titles between 2000 and 2008. Eight Hungarian water polo players have won three gold medals during their Olympic career but only Dezso Gyarmati, who competed at five consecutive editions of the Games between 1948 and 1964, was on teams that also won a silver and bronze medal. Gyarmati, who passed away in 2013, coached the Hungarian men's team to gold in 1976.
