General Interest

Guatemala made its first Olympic appearance at the 1952 Games in Helsinki. The NOC did not compete at the next three Olympic Games, but has sent a team of athletes to each edition since 1968.

In 2012 Erick Barrondo became the first Guatemalan competitor to win an Olympic medal by claiming silver in the men's 20km walk. He remains the only athlete from the NOC to have finished on the podium at the Olympic Games. Other competitors to have come close to a medal include equestrian jumper Oswaldo Mendez Herbruger [1980] and taekwondoka Heidi Juarez [2004], who both placed fourth in their respective sports.

Another notable performance came from the Guatemalan men's football team at the 1968 Games in Mexico City. They progressed from a group containing Thailand, Bulgaria, and Czechoslovakia, but were then beaten 1-0 in the quarterfinals by eventual gold medallists Hungary. Guatemala also competed in football at the Games in 1976 and 1988 but did not progress out of its group.

Shooter Francisco Romero has made five appearances at the Olympic Games, more than any other athlete from Guatemala. He competed in the skeet event between 1976 and 1996, missing only the 1988 Games in Seoul in that sequence.
