General Interest

Georgia's best performance at the Olympic Games came in 2008, when athletes from the NOC won seven medals [three gold, two silver, two bronze]. Georgia matched that overall total at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, but its haul was made up of two gold medals, one silver and four bronze.

Judoka Zurab Zviadauri claimed Georgia's first Olympic gold medal, winning the men's 90kg category at Athens 2004. Irakli Tsirekidze claimed the men's 90kg title four years later in Beijing, and Lasha Shavdatuashvili won the NOC's third gold medal in judo in the men's 66kg division at London 2012 to make the sport Georgia's most successful at the Olympic Games.

Wrestling has also been a source of medals for Georgia. Athletes from the NOC won a total of 17 medal across the freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines between 1996 and 2016. Manuchar Kvirkvelia is the only Georgian athlete to have claimed Olympic gold in Greco-Roman wrestling, winning the 74kg category in 2008, while Revaz Mindorashvili [2008] and Vladimir Khinchegashvili [2016] are the only two athletes to have secured gold in freestyle wrestling.

The only other sport in which Georgia has won Olympic gold is weightlifting. Georgi Asanidze claimed gold in the men's 85kg category at Athens 2004, and Lasha Talakhadze triumphed in the men's +105kg division at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Pistol shooter Nino Salukvadze is the sole female athlete representing Georgia to have finished on the podium at the Olympic Games. She claimed bronze in the women's 10m air pistol in 2008 in Beijing, 20 years after winning a gold and a silver while competing for the Soviet Union at Seoul 1988. Salukvadze also represented the Unified Team at the 1992 Games in Barcelona and has made a total of eight appearances at the Olympic Games [1988 - 2016], a joint record for female athletes at the Olympic Games.
