General Interest
Taekwondoka Anthony Obame Mylann became the first Gabonese athlete to win a medal at the Olympic Games when he claimed silver in the men's +80kg division at London 2012. Having made its Olympic debut at the 1972 Games in Munich, the NOC had waited 40 years for its first podium finish.
Boxer Joseph Mbouroukounda was Gabon's sole competitor in 1972 in Munich, where he lost in the first round in the featherweight category. The NOC did not make another appearance at the Olympic Games until 1984, with two boxers and two competitors in athletics making up the athlete delegation in Los Angeles, but Gabon has been represented at every edition of the Olympic Games since.
Judoka Melanie Engoang and sprinter Wilfried Bingangoye share the Gabonese record for most appearances at the Olympic Games. Engoang competed at four consecutive editions of the Games between 1992 and 2004, while Bingangoye contested the men's 100m at every edition of the Games between 2004 and 2016.
Gabon sent six athletes to compete at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. The delegation included Mael Ambonguilat, who became the first swimmer to represent Gabon at the Olympic Games. He placed 75th in the men's 50m freestyle.
