General Interest

General
LIVING AND TRAINING OVERSEAS
In 2011 he left Gabon for France to train at the National Institute of Sport, Expertise, and Performance [INSEP]. Two years later he relocated to Spain, and began training with coach Juan Antonio Ramos Sanchez at Club Elite Ramos & Brigitte Taekwondo in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. "I had to do everything possible to get out of my country, because it's impossible to reach the highest level in Gabon." (tokyo2020.org, 11 May 2020; bbc.com, 24 Apr 2020; info241.com, 28 Mar 2020; cympress.com, 18 Aug 2019; olympic.org, 06 Aug 2016)

OLYMPIC IMPACT
He says his silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, which was Gabon's first Olympic medal, inspired more Gabonese young people to get into sport. "A lot of youngsters have taken up taekwondo, but not only taekwondo. There are many young people that are motivated for success, and not only by me. I am just one more example, with my Olympic medal and my [2013] world title, that you can succeed even under difficult circumstances. You just have to try, by all means you have, to get to a high level. This is the message that I want to get across." (olympic.org, 06 Aug 2016)

FRIENDLY RIVAL
He has developed a friendship with Italian taekwondo athlete Carlo Molfetta, who defeated him in the +80kg category gold medal match at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. "Carlo often invites me to Italy. Every time we meet we inevitably end up talking about our match [at the 2012 Games]. He did a great job and he deserved the gold, it's not his fault I didn't win, but I want gold too. Carlo is the motivation that will push me all the way to [the 2020 Games in] Tokyo, my third Olympics, to try to win the only title I'm missing. I thought I was unknown to the world, but in Italy everyone stops me to take pictures and sign autographs." (gazzetta.it, 05 Jun 2018)
