Estonia - Profile
General Interest
Estonia competed at the Olympic Games for the first time in 1920 in Antwerp, where athletes from the NOC won one gold medal and two silver medals. Weightlifter Alfred Neuland became Estonia's first Olympic gold medallist at the 1920 Games, claiming victory in men's 67.5kg category. He went on to win another medal, this time a silver, at the 1924 Games in Paris.
Estonia has had most Olympic success in wrestling, winning five gold medals out of an overall total of 11 in the sport. All the NOC's gold medals in wrestling were won between Paris 1924 and the 1936 Games in Berlin, where Kristjan Palusalu became the first wrestler from any nation to win gold in the heavyweight category in both freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines.
Estonia did not compete at the Olympic Games again until 1992 in Barcelona, where female athletes represented the NOC for the first time. Track cyclist Erika Salumae won the women's sprint event, successfully defending the title she had won while representing the Soviet Union four years earlier in Seoul. She went on to finish sixth in the sprint event at her third Olympic Games in 1996.
Gerd Kanter is Estonia's most recent Olympic champion, winning gold in the men's discus throw at the 2008 Games in Beijing. Erki Nool is the only other athlete to have won gold in athletics for Estonia, claiming victory in the men's decathlon in 2000 in Sydney.
