At school he played football, basketball, volleyball, and tennis before following one of his classmates into rowing. "Discovering rowing was my classmate's fault. Going back to school again, after a long summer holiday, he persuaded me to try it. But after a couple of years, rowing wasn't so attractive to me anymore. I had already given up, but then the coach [Mihkel Leppik] came to my home and convinced me to continue, and I am most grateful to him for that." (worldrowing.com, 01 Sep 2016; esbl.ee, 08 May 2016)

General Interest

General
OLYMPIC MEMORIES
He made his Olympic debut at the 2004 Games in Athens, and has competed at each edition of the Olympic Games since then. "The first time is always the hardest. It wasn't so hard physically but rather mentally. From Beijing [in 2008] the greatest memory, besides the medal ceremony, was definitely the Great Wall of China. It shows that there are no limits to humanity's capabilities. The biggest impression in London [in 2012] was setting up our own small and compact Olympic Village. From Rio [in 2016] I will certainly remember the quite changeable weather conditions at the rowing venue." (worldrowing.com, 01 Sep 2016)

RETIREMENT PLANS
He intends to retire from competitive rowing following the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "I hope to put an end to my career with the [Tokyo] Olympics. After this year, I don't plan to compete in elite sport anymore. There are no retreats from it. I have also promised at home that this will be the last year." (sport.err.ee, 08 Apr 2020, 18 Jan 2020)

OTHER ACTIVITIES
He has served on the board of directors of both the Estonian Rowing Association and Parnu Soudeklubi in Estonia. (esbl.ee, 08 May 2016)
