General Interest
Croatia won five gold medals in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, the NOC's highest tally of gold medals at an edition of the Olympic Games. Brothers Valent Sinkovic and Martin Sinkovic claimed gold in rowing, winning the double sculls, while sailors Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic triumphed in the men's 470 event. Shooter Josip Glasnovic secured victory in men's trap while there were also gold medals in women's athletics for discus thrower Sandra Perkovic and javelin thrower Sara Kolak. Croatian athletes won a further three silver medals and two bronze medals in 2016 to bring the NOC's overall total to 10 - more than Croatia has won at any other edition of the Olympic Games.
Croatia made its Olympic debut as an independent nation at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, winning three medals. The men's basketball team made it all the way to final, which they lost to the 'Dream Team' of the United States of America, while big-serving tennis player Goran Ivanisevic won bronze medals in both men's singles and men's doubles [along with Goran Prpic].
Croatia won its first Olympic gold medal in 1996 in men's handball. Having finished second in the group stage, suffering one loss to Sweden, the Croatian team won their semifinal against France to set up a rematch with the Scandinavians for gold. In the final, the Croatians secured a one-goal victory to take the title, 27-26. The men's handball team again won gold in 2004 in Athens, and claimed bronze at London 2012. Venio Losert was the only player to be part of the Croatian squad in 1996, 2004, and 2012, and is also the sole athlete from the NOC [in any sport] to have won three medals at the Olympic Games.
Weightlifter Nikolai Peshalov was the first Croatian athlete to win Olympic gold in an individual sport, securing victory in the men's 62kg category at the 2000 Games in Sydney.
