Cote d'Ivoire won its first Olympic gold medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, with taekwondoka Cheikh Sallah Cisse triumphing in the men's welterweight 68-80kg category. Ruth Gbagbi also finished on the podium, claiming bronze in the women's taekwondo welterweight 57-67kg division to become the first female athlete to win a medal for Cote d'Ivoire.
Before Rio 2016, the NOC had won one medal in 12 previous appearances at the Games. Gabriel Tiacoh finished second in the men's 400m final at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.
Cote d'Ivoire made its Olympic debut at the 1964 Games in Tokyo. The NOC entered competitors in athletics and boxing events, with Gaoussou Kone providing the highlight - a sixth-place finish in the final of the men's 100m sprint.
