General Interest
Cape Verde sent five athletes to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where they represented the NOC in athletics, gymnastics, taekwondo, and boxing. Maria Andrade became the Cape Verde's first Olympic taekwondoka, placing 11th in the women's flyweight category.
Cape Verde has sent a team to every Olympic Games since making its debut in 1996 but is yet to win a medal. Marathon runner Antonio Zeferino is the NOC's only three-time Olympian. He competed at consecutive editions of the Games between 1996 and 2004, with a best result of 67th in Sydney in 2000.
The first female athlete to represent Cape Verde at the Olympic Games was Ismenia Frederico. She competed in the 100m sprint at Atlanta 1996, and made her second Olympic appearance four years later in Sydney. She is one of three Cape Verdean athletes, all of whom are women, to have competed at the Olympic Games on two occasions. Sprinter Lidiane Lopes Gomes [2012, 2016] and rhythmic gymnast Wania Monteiro [2004, 2008] are the others.
