General Interest

At the 2016 Olympic Game in Rio de Janeiro, middle-distance runner Francine Niyonsaba became Burundi's second Olympic medallist by claiming silver in the women's 800m. Venuste Niyongabo was the first competitor from Burundi to finish on the podium at the Olympic Games, winning gold in the men's 5000m in 1996 in Atlanta.

Burundian athletes competed solely in running events at the Olympic Games in 1996 and 2000. In 2004 the NOC sent swimmers Larissa Inangarore and Emery Nziyumvira as part of its delegation, and in 2012 Odette Ntahomvukiye became the first judoka to represent Burundi at the Games.

The NOC's first three-time Olympian was Arthemon Hatungimana. He competed in the 800m in 1996, 2000 and 2004. Since then, swimmer Elsie Uwamahoro and distance runner Diane Nukuri-Johnson have also joined the three-Games club, the latter over a span of 16 years between 2000 and 2016.
