Belarus - Profile
General Interest
Belarus first participated in the summer Olympic Games as an independent nation in Atlanta in 1996. Athletes from Belarus had previously competed as part of the Soviet Union, as well as the Unified Team in 1992.
Rower Ekaterina Karsten won Belarus' first Olympic gold as an independent nation with her victory in the women's single sculls in 1996. She then successfully defended her title four years later in Sydney, before claiming silver in the same event at Athens 2004 and bronze in 2008 in Beijing. She is the only Belarusian athlete to have won more than one summer Olympic gold medal, and also shares the distinction of being the Belarusian athlete with the most appearances at the summer Games with Vladimir Samsonov. Karsten and Samsonov have both competed at the Games on six occasions.
Belarus has won three Olympic gold medals in athletics, more than in any other sport. Yanina Karolchyk-Pravalinskaya secured gold in the women's shot put at the 2000 Games in Sydney, while Ellina Zvereva also won the women's discus. Yuliya Nestsiarenka secured the women's 100m title four years later in Athens.
Belarus won nine medals at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, which is its lowest total since starting to compete as an independent NOC. Gymnast Uladzislau Hancharou claimed gold in the men's individual trampoline event to win Belarus' only gold medal in Brazil.
