Austria - Profile
General Interest
Austria has sent an athlete delegation to every Olympic Games except the 1920 edition in Antwerp. The NOC has been most successful in canoe sprint, weightlifting and sailing, winning three gold medals in each sport.
Swimmer Paul Neumann became Austria's first Olympic gold medallist when he won the 500m freestyle at the 1896 Games in Athens, while Otto Herschmann claimed a silver medal in the men's 100m freestyle. Herschmann went on to represent Austria in fencing at the Olympic Games, winning silver in team sabre in 1912 in Stockholm, and also later became president of the Austrian Olympic Committee.
The 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin were the most fruitful for Austria, with competitors from the NOC winning a total of 13 medals. Gregor Hradetzky won two gold medals in men's canoe sprint, while there were also silver medals for the men's football and handball teams.
Some of Austria's more recent Olympic success has come in sailing. Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher won gold in the Tornado class at the 2000 Games in Sydney and then defended their title four years later in Athens. Chris Sieber also picked up gold in the men's Mistral in Sydney.
Austrian athletes came home empty-handed from the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The only other occasion the NOC sent a team to the Games and did not win a medal was in 1964 in Tokyo. Sailors Thomas Zajac and Tanja Frank claimed bronze in the Nacra 17 at the 2016 Olympic Games, but this was the only medal Austria won in Rio de Janeiro.
