Argentina - Profile
General Interest
Argentina won three gold medals at the 2016 Olympic Games. The men's hockey team defeated Belgium 4-2 in the final, while sailors Cecilia Carranza and Santiago Lange secured gold in the Nacra 17 event. Paula Pareto also triumphed in the women's 48kg judo competition. Four years earlier in London, taekwondoka Sebastian Crismanich won Argentina's only gold in the men's 68-80kg category.
Argentina won its first Olympic medal at the 1924 Games in Paris when triple jumper Luis Brunetto claimed silver in the men's event. Later at the same edition of the Games, the NOC secured its first Olympic title when the men's polo team won all four of their matches to seal gold in a round-robin competition.
The 1924 Games were the start of 28 years of success for Argentina, in which it won 13 of its 22 Olympic gold medals. Argentinian boxers excelled during this time, with seven fighters crowned Olympic champion in an overall haul of 20 boxing medals won between Paris 1924 and the 1952 Games in Helsinki.
Apart from Moscow in 1980, Argentina competed at each edition of the Olympic Games between 1956 and 2000, claiming a total of 18 medals. However, athletes representing the NOC did not win a gold medal during this period. The drought was broken in 2004 when the men's basketball and football teams both secured gold in Athens. The basketball victory was particularly memorable as it came after a semifinal win over heavy favourites, the United States of America. The football team would go on to successfully defend their title at the 2008 Games. One member of the side, Javier Mascherano, played in both Athens and Beijing and he remains the only Argentinian athlete from any sport to have won two gold medals at the Olympic Games.
