General Interest

The Republic of Korea has won six gold medals in seven appearances at the Olympic Winter Games between 1994 and 2018.

The only time the team competed and failed to win gold was at Vancouver 2010, when they were disqualified despite crossing the line first in world record time. Tournament officials judged that Kim Min-Jung had impeded Chinese skater Sun Linlin during the race, and the Republic of Korea team was given a final ranking of eighth.

In their home Games at PyeongChang 2018, the hosts and defending champions only led for the final two laps of the race, when Choi Min-jeong edged China at the line, though the Chinese team was later disqualified.

At their Olympic debut in Lillehammer in 1994, the Republic of Korea team had an average age of 15, which included Kim Yun-Mi, then aged 13, who became the youngest Olympic gold medallist.

They won back-to-back world titles in 2015 and 2016, and again in 2018 and 2019, increasing their World Championship gold medal haul to nine. They were disqualified at the 2017 World Championships in Rotterdam and did not compete in Dordrecht in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The team's overall world ranking in 2021/22 is second behind the Netherlands.
