Team Dupont

General Interest

Denmark women have one medal in six Olympic Winter Games appearances, with the fabled silver won by Helena Blach Lavrsen at Nagano 1998. The King of Denmark attended the championship final – a 7-5 loss to Canada’s legendary Sandra Schmirler – and declared the immediate building of dedicated curling facilities, of which three were constructed. Twenty-four years and a combined 13-32 won/loss record later, the Beijing competitors speak of dwindling curling participation numbers and a desire to reach the podium again.

At World Championships, Denmark has won eight medals including three from Blach Lavrsen in the 1980s and 90s. Madeleine Dupont’s lengthy career has delivered results ranging from silver (2007) to 11th (2018, 2019). A major highlight was the team’s surprise fifth-place finish in 2021, which qualified Denmark in fifth place for Beijing.

At European Championships, the medals and wild results are similar, with Dupont winning bronze twice (2008, 2009) but finishing seventh and eighth in her last two trips.

This season, Dupont has battled a back injury which has limited her training and competition. Her team missed the 2022 World Championship Qualification by finishing eighth at the Europeans, but the squad rebounded by winning the World Qualifying Event at Lohja in late January.

In head-to-head matchups against the Beijing field, the Danes have a 15-31 career record and a 7-16 mark in the current Olympic cycle. Dupont has played Canada’s Jennifer Jones only twice – 19 years apart – for a 1-1 record. They are 2-5 against Great Britain, 0-7 versus ROC, 4-6 against Sweden and 2-9 versus Switzerland, with the last victory coming in 2012.

World Ranking: 10th (31.646 pts)
