Team de Cruz

General Interest

Switzerland men are the defending bronze medallists, their third such Olympic medal following Ralph Stoeckli at Vancouver 2010 and Andreas Schwaller at Salt Lake City 2002. Patrick Huerlimann won the first gold medal of the modern era, at Nagano 1998.

Swiss skip Sven Michel placed eighth at Sochi 2014 and joined Team de Cruz at third stone for the current Olympic cycle. De Cruz skips the team but throws second stones, while fourth stones are delivered by Benoit Schwarz.

At World Championships, Swiss men have scored three gold medals to go with six silver and 11 bronze. Team de Cruz have won four of those bronze, in all four appearances starting in 2014.

The bronze rush continues at European Championships, where the squad has captured two bronze in their last four appearances, to go with a silver medal earned in 2015.

This season, Team de Cruz are 33-14 with a scoring average of 7.67 points per game and an average of 5.69 points against. They swept their Olympic Trials challenge series against the rival Yannick Schwaller foursome and won the World Curling Tour’s Swiss Cup in Basel, in addition to third-place finishes at a Grand Slam tournament and the Euro Super Series.

Team de Cruz had a strong head-to-head record against Gushue prior to 2017, winning five of nine matchups, but the Canadians are 9-2 since. De Cruz is 64-69 lifetime against the Beijing field and 34-35 over the last quadrennial, with recent winning records against People's Republic of China and Denmark (2-0), ROC (3-0), Norway (6-3) and USA (3-2). Since 2018, they’re 1-5 against Canada, 7-11 versus Great Britain, 3-5 against Italy and 7-9 versus Sweden. The Swiss and Swedes have battled five times in this Covid-ravaged season alone, with de Cruz holding a slight 3-2 edge.

Team de Cruz’s bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships qualified Switzerland in third place for Beijing.

World Ranking: 2nd (69.937 pts)
