“I just liked it very much from day one, and it turned out to be a good decision to keep going. I guess I had better chances in curling than in football, to find some success.” (Athlete, 18 Oct2021)

:

“It’s always tough to say I want to win the gold medal because all the other teams also want to win that. I really, really want to do as good as possible. We know if we play well we can achieve everything.” (Athlete, 18 Oct 2021)

:

His partner of 13 years, Alina Paetz (SUI). “We share so much. We live together for five years, also we train together, do gym together. I learn a lot from her.” (Athlete, 18 Oct 2021)

He has at least 15 pairs of lucky socks, with fun designs on them, that he wears during games. “They have doughnuts or burgers, or fries or whatever. I have some friends’ faces on them too. They can’t be too boring, so something has to be very colourful. I also usually shower before a game, I don’t know why. Just to freshen up.” (Athlete, 18 Oct 2021)

:

“I’ve been around for so many years now. If you have fun on the ice and off the ice then everything is way more easy. If you really want to train hard it’s not fun. This is not good for me.” (Athlete, 18 Oct 2021)

General Interest

BACK TO THE BRICKS
Left his bricklaying career to become a funded athlete but returned to his job during the pandemic. Plans to return again following the Beijing 2022 Olympic WinterGames or World Championships.

BREAK
In 2016 he decided to step away from curling, as he felt he needed a break to focus on his personal and mental health. When his current team asked him to join them in 2019, and he realised he had the motivation to commit for another Olympic cycle. (Athlete, 18 Oct 2021)

FORMER SKIP
Though he skipped teams from 2011-14, including the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, he does not miss the position and revels playing third stones. “I always liked to sweep, even during the time I skipped my old team. Skip was always not my favourite position, but I had no choice, I had to skip the team because we had no options. In my junior years, I always played third. So this is nothing new for me.”

MIXED DOUBLES
“There are more bonspiels in foursome curling and it’s a bit more professional, I would say. There’s still some work to do in mixed doubles. But I always liked the mixed doubles format.” (Athlete, 18 Oct 2021)
