General Interest

Italy’s men return for their third Olympic curling tournament under the stewardship of Joel Retornaz, who skipped their host effort at Torino 2006 (4-5) and skipped while throwing third stones four years ago in PyeongChang (3-6).

In 24 World Championship appearances, Italy’s top result is a fifth-place finish in 1976. However, the current squad has a winning record over the past two championships (14-11) and has won bronze medals at two of the past three European Championships – in 2018 and 2021 – going 14-8 in the process.

In fact, Retornaz is having a strong 2021/22 season. His team is 42-15 over six events including a runner-up finish at a World Curling Tour event in Champery and two third-place finishes, in Bern and Stirling. The team qualified ninth for Beijing by winning the second of three berths at the Olympic Qualification Event at Leeuwarden.

Team Retornaz is 28-58 in head-to-head matchups against the field in Beijing. This includes a 1-4 record against Canada (the win coming at Torino 2006), 1-9 versus Great Britain, 5-9 against Norway and 2-9 against the United States.

Though their record is 3-16 against Sweden, the Italians are 2-3 in their last five contests since the start of the 2019 season. Their results against Switzerland are streaky; the Swiss had won eight in a row but the Italians have now won five of their last six matchups dating back to the 2018 Europeans. Italy are also 3-2 against ROC but have lost their last two games, both by 8-7 scorelines.
