OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Spain's first Olympic Winter Games appearance was at Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1936 and it has never failed to compete in the Olympic Winter Games since. Its first two winter medals were won by the Fernandez Ochoa family, with Francisco winning the men's slalom in 1972 and 20 years later his sister Blanca, herself a veteran of three previous Winter Olympic campaigns, won bronze in the women's slalom.
Six Spanish athletes have won two Olympic gold medals, with track cyclist Joan Llaneras also winning two silver medals. Canoeist David Cal is the only Spanish Olympian to win five medals (one gold, four silver), all between 2004 and 2012.
In 1992, Barcelona hosted the Olympic Games of the XXVth Olympiad, which proved a huge boost for Spain's Olympic achievements. Having previously won 26 medals (five gold), Spain added 22 more in Barcelona and its tally now totals 171 (49 gold). Madrid was among the final three candidates bidding to host the 2020 Olympic Games.
