OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Romania's first participant was Gheorghe Plagino, who competed in trap shooting at the Paris 1900 Olympic Games. It next competed at Paris 1924 and has since missed only the 1932 and 1948 Olympic Games.
Since making its Olympic Winter Games debut at St. Moritz 1928, Romania has only missed one edition (Squaw Valley 1960). Its single medal (bronze) was won by Ion Panturu and Nicolae Neagoe in the 2-man bobsleigh at Grenoble 1968.
Romania's 294 Winter Olympians (238 men, 56 women) have competed in 13 of the 15 disciplines on the current Olympic Winter Games programme, missing only curling and snowboarding to date.
Biathlete Eva Tofalvi has competed at six Olympic Winter Games, appearing from 1998 to 2018. She was Opening Ceremony flagbearer three times (2002, 2010, 2014). Willi Zacharias competed for Romania in Alpine and cross-country skiing at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1936 Olympic Winter Games and played handball at the Berlin 1936 Olympic Games.
Romania has won 309 Olympic medals, including 90 gold. Romania is best known for its women gymnasts and has also produced several top rowers and canoeists. The most famous Romanian Olympian is gymnast Nadia Comaneci, who became the first athlete to earn a perfect 10 in Olympic competition and won a total of five golds and nine medals. Rowers Elisabeta Oleniuc-Lipa and Georgeta Damian-Andrunache have also won five gold medals.
