OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Athletes from the Russian Federation will compete for ROC at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing after the decision taken by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in December 2020 regarding the case of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA).
The Russian Federation made its debut at the Olympic Winter Games at Lillehammer 1994. Russian athletes previously represented the Russian Empire (1900-12), the Soviet Union (1952-88), the Unified Team (1992), and Olympic Athletes from Russia (2018) at the Olympic Games.
Its most successful sport has been cross-country skiing winning 14 gold medals (33 total). Larisa Lazutina leads all Russian skiers with four gold medals, including three at Nagano 1998 where she won a medal in all five races she competed in. Lazutina's relay teammate at Lillehammer 1994, Lyubov Yegorova, won three gold medals representing Russian Federation, but won another three gold medals previously as a member of the Unified Team at Albertville 1992.
Figure skating has also been successful for Russian skaters, winning 14 gold medals. Five figure skaters have won two gold medals each with Yevgeny Plyushchenko also adding two silver medals, standing on the podium in all four of his Olympic appearances (2002-14).
Korean-born Viktor An has won the most gold medals among male athletes with three in short track speed skating. After winning three gold medals at Torino 2006 representing the Republic of Korea, he gained Russian citizenship and won four medals at Sochi 2014. An has accounted for four of six Russian short track medals.
Russian Federation has topped the medal tally on two occasions, at their debut at Lillehammer 1994 and 20 years later at Sochi 2014 as the host nation, winning 11 gold medals on both occasions.
