OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Though the Republic of Korea was formally created in August 1948, its National Olympic Committee (NOC) was already established and recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in June 1947. Republic of Korea has competed at all Olympic Games since London 1948, with the exception of Moscow 1980. It made its first Olympic Winter Games appearance in 1948 and has since missed only one Games in 1952.
It has won 70 medals at the Olympic Winter Games, including 31 gold, with Republic of Korea the top nation in short track speed skating, winning 48 medals (24 gold). Of its 70 medals, 64 have come in either short or long track speed skating. The youngest gold medallist at the Olympic Winter Games is short track skater Kim Yun-Mi, who won gold at age 13 years and 83 days at Lillehammer 1994.
Lee Seung-Hun, Park Seung-Hui, and Lee Ho-Seok have won five Olympic Winter medals, both Lees in short track and Park in long track speed skating. An Hyeon-Su won three golds and a bronze for Republic of Korea at the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games, but then competing as Viktor An for the Russian Federation repeated his three gold and one bronze medal effort at Sochi 2014.
Since 1948, Republic of Korea has won the majority of its medals in boxing, wrestling, judo and weightlifting. More recently, it has become the dominant nation in archery. The women have also won medals in volleyball, basketball, hockey, table tennis and archery. Republic of Korea has won 357 medals, 127 of them gold. Archer Kim Su-Nyeong and shooter Jin Jong-O have the most medals among Korean Olympians, with six. Kim, Jin, and short track speed skater Jeon I-Gyeong lead Korean Olympians each with four golds.
