OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Luxembourg is usually considered to have first competed at the Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games, the same year in which it formed its National Olympic Committee (NOC). However, in the 1980s French athletics historian Alain Bouille discovered that Michel Theato, winner of the Paris 1900 marathon, was a Luxembourg national, although his participation is attributed to France. Luxembourg won three Olympic medals in the now-defunct Art Contests, with two Olympic art titles (1924, 1928) by the illustrator Jean Jacoby.
Luxembourg has also sporadically competed at the Olympic Winter Games, attending in 1928, 1936, 1988, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2006, 2014, and 2018. In 1928 and 1936 they competed in bobsleigh, with a 5-man team (1928) and two 2-man teams (1936), with one of the bobsledders, Willy Heldenstein, carrying the Luxembourgeois flag at the St. Moritz 1928 Opening Ceremony.
The nation has had 13 Winter Olympians, with 12 men and Fleur Maxwell competing in women's figure skating in 2006.
Luxembourg has competed at a total of 25 Olympic Games since 1912, missing only the Los Angeles 1932 Olympic Games. It has won four Olympic medals, with one gold by Josy Barthel at Helsinki 1952 over 1500m. This includes two silver medals won by Alpine skier Marc Girardelli who competed at the 1988, 1992, and 1994 Olympic Winter Games, winning silver medals in the super-G and giant slalom at Albertville 1992. A native Austrian, Girardelli, would later win four World Championships, five overall World Cup titles, and nine World Cup races.
