OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Japan first competed at the Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games, led by Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo, and since has only missed the London 1948 and Moscow 1980 Games. While Japan has only missed the St. Mortiz 1948 Olympic Winter Games since its first Winter appearance in 1928.
It has won 58 medals, with 14 gold, at the Olympic Winter Games. Japan's best sport has been speed skating, winning 21 medals (four gold). Japan's next best discipline has been ski jumping, highlighted by its first medals in the 1972 normal hill event when Japan swept the medals in Sapporo, led by gold medallist Yukio Kasaya.
Seven Japanese athletes have won three medals at the Olympic Winter Games, led by ski jumper Kazuyoshi Funaki and Nordic combined skier Takanori Kono, both with two golds. Two Japanese female speed skaters have won three medals - Nao Kodaira and Miho Takagi. At PyeongChang 2018, ski jumper Noriaki Kasai (three-time Olympic medallist) set a record for most appearances by an athlete at the Olympic Winter Games, by making his eighth straight appearance (1992-2018).
Japan has won 555 Olympic medals, with 183 gold. Japan was the dominant country in men's gymnastics from 1956 until the mid-1980s, while at times, it has been the top country in swimming and one of the top nations in wrestling and weightlifting. Its premier Olympic medal winners have been male gymnasts, led by Takashi Ono (13), Sawao Kato (12), and Akinori Nakayama (10). Kato, the individual all-around champion in 1968 and 1972, leads Japanese Olympians with eight gold medals.
