Brother Yoshito Watabe (Nordic Combined): Three-time Olympian, competing at Sochi 2014 (normal hill/10km - 15th; large hill/10km - 25th; team - fifth) and PyeongChang 2018 (normal hill/10km - 12th; large hill/10km - 20th; team - fourth), and Beijing 2022. 2017 World Championships bronze medallist in team sprint.

At age 12, broke his wrist ski jumping, so he started cross-country skiing during his two-month recovery period. He and his brother Yoshito soon started competing in Nordic combined. (nbcolympics.com)

Milestones

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Bronze medallist in the large hill/10km event at Beijing 2022, finished seventh in the normal hill/10km event.
Bronze medallist in the team event (large hill/4x5km) at Beijing 2022, with team members Hideaki Nagai, Ryota Yamamoto and his brother Yoshito Watabe. They started from the fourth position after the ski jumping part and finished only 0.3 seconds behind silver medallist Germany.

Olympic debut in Torino 2006 (19th - large hill/7.5km). In Vancouver 2010 he finished 21st in normal hill/10km, ninth in large hill/10km and sixth with the team.

He is a two-time Olympic silver medallist in the normal hill/10km (2014, 2018). During the normal hill/10km cross-country ski race at Sochi 2014, the lead alternated with German Eric Frenzel, and with 500m from the finish, the German launched a final attack, beating Watabe by 10m. His silver medal was the second-best Nordic combined result for a Japanese athlete in 20 years.

At PyeongChang 2018, he won his second career silver medal while competing with a left rib fracture.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Four-time World Championships medallist, winning one gold (2009 team), one silver (2017 individual large hill/10km), and two bronze medals (2017 team, 2019 individual normal hill/10km). Won the 2017 team sprint bronze with his younger brother Yoshito. Made his World Championships debut in 2007.

He has eight fourth places in World Championships, team and individual together.

WORLD CUP
Won the overall World Cup title in 2017/18. Break-through year in 2011, improving his podium finishes from one to 14 and finished second in the overall rankings. Referred to himself as having “fourth-place syndrome” in World Cup events leading up to Sochi 2014, as he was frequently finishing just off the podium. First podium finish was third in the large hill/10km in Seefeld (2010).
In 2021/22 he had nine top-10 results, his best a fifth place in Klingenthal (large hill/10km) and is currently ranked 10th in the overall World Cup.
