OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Chile's initial Olympic appearance came in 1912 and it has only missed the Olympic Games of 1932 and 1980. Chile formed its National Olympic Committee (NOC) in 1934 and was recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the same year. It first competed at the Olympic Winter Games at St. Moritz 1948, and has participated at most subsequent Olympic Winter Games since, missing 1972 and 1980.
Chile has only competed in skiing-related disciplines - Alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing and freestyle skiing. It has had 52 Winter Olympians (42 men, 10 women), with its best finish being 11th by Alpine skier Thomas Grob in Alpine combined (Nagano 1998), with his brother, Rainer Grob, placing 13th in that same event. Another brother, Duncan Grob, competed in Alpine skiing in 2002 and 2006. The best Chilean finish by a woman at the Olympic Winter Games was 13th by freestyle skier Dominique Ohaco at the Sochi 2014 slopestyle.
Two Chilean Alpine skiers have competed at four Olympic Winter Games, Nils Linneberg (1988, 1992, 1994, 1998), and Noelle Barahona (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018).
Chilean athletes have won 13 Olympic medals, two gold (both in 2004), seven silver, and four bronze. Tennis player Fernando Gonzalez has won three Olympic medals, one of each colour, the most by any Chilean Olympian. In 2004, Chile won tennis gold in men's singles and doubles, with Gonzalez partnering Nicolas Massu in doubles, and Massu also winning the singles.
