OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
The National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus (formerly Belorussia or White Russia) was formed in 1991 after the break-up of the Soviet Union. Belarus competed as an independent nation for the first time at the Lillehammer 1994 Olympic Winter Games, with 33 athletes who won two medals.
Belarus has won 103 Olympic medals with 21 gold. Of that, they have won 18 medals, including eight gold, at the Olympic Winter Games, with biathlete Darya Domracheva the most successful Belarusian Olympian with six medals (four gold).
Their best sport has been biathlon (10 medals, four golds), followed by freestyle skiing (seven medals, four golds). Their best Winter performance came at Sochi 2014 (six medals, five golds).
The most successful Belarusians at the Olympic Games have been rower Yekaterina Khodatovich-Karsten, with four medals (2-1-1), and canoeists Roman Petrushenko and Vadim Makhnyov, who both won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
Representing the Unified Team in 1992, Belarusian Vitali Shcherba won six gold medals in gymnastics. Four years later, he won four bronze medals for Belarus giving him a personal total of 10 medals.
