TEENAGE CAREER
The demands of professional tennis took a toll on him when he was playing as a teenager, resulting in him having a few years away from the sport. "I played until I was 18, my best moment and I decided to quit. I got tired and I didn't want to hear anything about tennis or travelling. Being away from the family and friends and not being able to go out at that age really can isolate you. Sport is really demanding in regards to time. I didn't compete for three years. The strange thing is that I quit, but I became a tennis instructor. I always had a connection with tennis, competing or not. At age 21 I returned and got to number 18 in the world. I thought it was going to be more difficult because I was overweight and out of shape. Since then I've been getting better every day. There's still a lot to improve and I have to take advantage of each moment." (resumensports.com, 16 Sep 2018)
