He has been troubled by an injury to his right elbow during his career. He first had surgery on the problem in February 2012, and then had a second operation in April 2016. The injury continued to affect him in the lead-up to the 2016 Paralympic Games, although he was able to compete in Rio de Janeiro. He was then out of action between November 2016 until April 2017. "I think for me, what's important is how many more learning moments I get to have over my career. These moments really elevate your skill. I've spent so much time in the sport, the ideas come a lot faster than they used to. That's why I still feel like I have so much room to grow, and why I still feel like I can get a little better by the end of my career." (parasapo.tokyo, 01 Jan 2020)

General
OVERCOMING SETBACKS
He had hoped to win his third consecutive gold medal in men's singles at the Paralympic Games in 2016 following his victories at Beijing 2008 and London 2012. However, he was affected by an injury to his right elbow in the lead-up to the 2016 Games, and eventually had to settle for a bronze medal in men's doubles. He made a number of alterations in the years that followed, which included changes to his technique as well as switching coaches from Hiromichi Maruyama to Tasuku Iwami. "I've never watched any videos related to the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. It still makes my heart sink to see photos. After returning to Japan from Rio de Janeiro, I focused on changing my wheelchair position and backhand technique in order not to cause problems in my right elbow. All of my skills were from coach Hiromichi Maruyama, but I wanted to see my performance from a different perspective. Therefore I decided to get a new coach. Our style is to keep discussing whether something is working or not, and to figure it out together. And it's okay if we end up making the wrong decision, because one of us can always say, 'Hey, we made a mistake,' and we can go back to what we were doing before."
