She quit university due to her impairment and was later invited to take up fencing. "I was surprised, even shocked when the Paralympic Committee of Georgia suggested I could do wheelchair fencing. Impairment Details
At age 18 she was diagnosed with a spinal cord tumour. She underwent subsequent surgery, which resulted in paralysis. "It all went very fast because the tumour was life threatening. I did not know that I was going to be paralysed before I went into surgery and then, suddenly, I was in a wheelchair. At first, I did not know what to do, I just stayed in my room and did nothing.
